I drove two and a half hours a few weeks back to marvel in the wonder that is Metric - AMAZING SHOW! If you get a chance to see them, I highly reccommend you get your sorry ass down to the ticket booth.. High energy show, Emily Haines throws a constant temper tantrum at the synths, comes across as being slightly psychotic at times. However, that's all cancelled out by the fact that she's so damned cute! ^_^

Strangely enough, Metric sounds a gazillion times better live. I couldn't believe it. AMAZING. DAMNED AMAZING.

Ugh, I'm sorry if this community's kind of dying. I'm trying to think of more ways to make it better, but really I'm doing what I can. I'm going to remove the rating part and just let this be an open community where anyone can talk about concerts, bands, zines, scenes and other stuff.

In other news, Jess and I have been hearing things about a possible break up of Le Tigre. This of course makes us both sad to think about, but we're keeping our fingers crossed and hoping that they're still making music. Let me know if you guys have heard any other news about it.

Misogynist music listeners [24 Feb 2006|05:17pm]

robots_takeover
This week I've had chats with several guys in my town, both at college and at work, about the kind of rock music that they listen to. While we were disputing about which bands were better, I noticed that all of these guys only listed all-male bands. When I brought up some of my favourite female bands and they mentioned that they had never heard of any of them, I very breifly stated the genre and that it was a female singer or screamer. Without giving a second to process this information, the guys outright stated that they wouldn't listen to these bands because they didn't like the sound of females in rock/punk/metal, and furthermore that they believed females had no place in the music scene outside of bubble gum (which obviously they would not listen to anyways). What are your thoughts on this shared attitude in men (and sometimes women as well), and in what ways would you/have you tried to contradict this belief?

Sorry for the lack of updates, guys. Me and Jess have been frequently busy with school. I hope you'll forgive us.

In other news, I want you all to give input on any requests on bands/artists of the week, so that they might be featured soon.

So comment on this entry if you have any thoughts. Thanks!

By the way, if you haven't watched the video for Le Tigre's 'Deceptacon'.. I highly reccommend you do so. It's frickin' genius. Genius!!

I just thought I'd let you all know that I am officially on a quest for tickets for the Horrorpops show in Winnipeg, MB at the Collective Cabaret on April 15th. Wish me luck. WISH ME LUCK I SAY.

Rockrgrl Magazine [24 Jan 2006|03:53pm]
tragicfolklore
Last month, I ordered four back-issues of a magazine called Rockrgrl, and today I finally received two of the copies. Although they are no longer putting out any new issues, you can order back-issues (so long as they haven't sold out yet), and 100% of each issue is dedicated to feminist issues, females in rock (and other genres), female media, and anything else you could think of. The magazines cost $7 each, and this cost pays for yr shipping and handling. You're almost guaranteed to find yr favourite 1994-2005 female indie and alternative bands. So if you guys wanted to check this out, it is great literature to indulge yr free time with.

And P.S. I'm going to be posting up the Band of the Week either tomorrow or Thursday. I have a pretty good idea of who I want to feature, but just in case, does anyone have any suggestions?

Band of the week! [17 Jan 2006|12:09am]

rockthecasbah06
This week, I am going to pick the band of the week. I'm am going to pick my favorite band, The Slits.

There is so much that could be said. They came out of the punk scene, participated in the White Riot, opened for The Clash at Bonds, recorded three of the late John Peel's favorite BBC radio sessions, and recorded two great albums.

As far as women in music go, they were pioneers. Here you had three white women from different countries (Ari was born in Germany and Viv was born in France) mixing dub and reggae into their music. Not only did they elbow their way into the punk scene, they did it playing the music of a culture that believed that a pregnant woman should not be allowed to handle a man's food.

In Maria Raha's book Cinderella's Big Score, she mentions that when Le Tigre has shown the cover of Cut on their video boards, it has gotten a huge ovation.

Photobucket is being difficult, so I will post some pics later :).

Scavenger Hunt #1 [05 Jan 2006|04:22pm]
tragicfolklore
Scavenger Hunt:

1. A colorbar of Dr. Pepper (cherry vanilla dr. pepper works even better):
2. A community that offers icons of sleater-kinney:
3. A site that offers a list of concert dates by cities rather than bands:
4. Jessicka's (of JOJ and Scarling.) myspace account (it does exist):
5. Lyrics to a song that talks about any sort of feminist topic: (make sure it's a topic and not just a mentioning of the word)

Each question answered is worth 10 points, but the first three gets 5 bonus points each if you answer more than one. This scavenger hunt is staying up until all questions are answered, or until the end of next month (Feb. 28th). The first person to answer a question gets to "claim" it (so to speak), and that question is crossed out and their screenname is put beside it.

I really hope everyone gets a chance to participate. Remember, 500 points= $5 gift certificate to Amazon, my treat. :D

Mod//post [03 Jan 2006|04:17pm]
tragicfolklore
Hey guys, it's yr mod Elle here. ^_^

Well, I guess I'm due to start the first scavenger hunt and post the band/artist of the week for this week sometime soon. The community's running a bit slow, but I've been trying to promote as much as I can.

So I have two questions for everyone:

1. The application's looking a bit....short. Does anyone have any ideas of what questions I should add on? Think of what sort of questions would you all want to ask any new members. I was thinking about adding an opinions section, but I don't know if it would be entirely relevant in order to get in. What are yr thoughts on this?

2. Does anyone know of any good communities that would be available for affiliating with that have to do with intellectual rating communities or punk/alternative communities?

Thanks again, and I hope to hear from everyone soon. Don't forget to invite yr friends and communities to join us here at wetookthebomp!

I love these ladies. They have a great look, a great sound, and I hope they make it big in the UK and possibly in America. Gemma Clarke, the drummer, was an original member of Babyshambles. Has anyone else heard them before?

Dolly Mixture [31 Dec 2005|11:12pm]

This is my favorite site on the internet, because I had to fight the temptation to buy their record for a pretty penny!

The group at one point was Captain Sensible's back-up singers (they even appeared on the Top of the Pops), but here they are a pop trio, singing some wonderful tunes. I suggest Grass is Greener and Been Teen (which was produced by Sensible and fellow Damned member Paul Gray).
